Be Essential - Sweet Orange Essential Oil
A favorite oil used in Aromatherapy, Orange essential oil has a fresh, sweet, citrus smell and is a valuable treatment oil for many ailments. Orange essential oil offers a magnitude of health benefits and therapeutic properties.
Anti-depressant: Well-known for its uplifting properties, orange essential oil is soothing to the mind and helps to relieve stress. It is refreshing and relaxing and commonly used for the treatment of anxiety.
Anti-inflammatory: It provides relief from both internal and external inflammation caused by infections. It is helpful in treating swollen tissue by stimulating blood circulation.
Improves Digestion: It is known to promote digestion, ease constipation and increase the absorption of vitamin C. Use as a massage oil in the abdominal area.
Encourages Detoxification: Sweet Orange essential oil encourages detoxification by acting as a diuretic. It also stimulates the lymphatic system, the bladder and kidneys. Increased urination assists in the elimination of toxins like uric acid, bile and excess salts and helps relieve fluid retention. Detox and cleansing properties help breakdown and eliminate cellulite.
Skin Treatment: Orange essential oil is known to promote the production of collagen as well as increase the blood flow to the skin. It is helpful at soothing dry, irritated skin as well as acne-prone skin. It is excellent for rubbing on calluses on the feet.
Caution: Citrus essential oils (lemon, lime, orange, tangerine and grapefruit) are to be used with caution when you expose your skin to the sun, due to their inherent PHOTOSENSITIVITY. Notice I say “with caution”, not “stop using them unless you never leave your house”.
When you apply products formulated with citrus essential oils and expose your skin to the sun, skin discolorations including but not limited to blotchiness, uneven pigmentation, brown spots or freckles may occur. And, this hyper-pigmentation may be permanent.
Experience tells us that many of us want to wear fragrances with citrus essential oils during the day, so we think it’s a good idea to make sure to consistently apply a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB protective) sunscreen to all areas of exposed skin and/or cover up skin wherever you’ve applied your skincare products containing citrus essential oils. Not only broad spectrum sunscreen, but protective clothing including hats, dark fabrics and sunglasses will add up to superior protection from these two types of potentially harmful ultraviolet rays.
Before using perform a small patch test on your inner forearm or back. Apply a small quantity of diluted essential oil and cover with a bandage. If you experience any irritation use carrier oil or cream to further dilute the essential oil, and then wash with soap and water. If no irritation occurs after 48 hours it is safe to use on your skin.
